Waiting Patiently

A black-crowned night-heron sits and patiently awaits the next passing meal. I have to travel to a nearby river (10 minute drive) to observe this bird. I see them fly over our lake frequently but for some reason they don't roost or hunt there. I've yet to see one snatch a catch from the river but they typically find a spot and stand there motion-less for a very long time. This is a short and stocky bird, built nothing like the yellow-crowned night heron or most egrets.
